CHPD in the community (25.02.09)

Leadership development consultancy, the Centre for High Performance Development (CHPD), has received a certificate of recognition for its work with young people in the London Borough of Southwark.

For the last three years, CHPD has taken part in a number of schemes organised by the Southwark Education Business Alliance (EBA).  These include:

• The school reading scheme – every week three CHPD employees read with local school children
• The secondary school mentoring scheme – a number of CHPD employees meet up every fortnight with their mentee to help them with all aspects of school and career development.
• The prefect training scheme – a half day training session with some would-be prefects to help with communication and influencing skills

Kay Tear, organiser of the volunteering at CHPD, explains some of the benefits to both employees and school children: “We get a huge sense of satisfaction helping out the youngsters we meet.  Over the time of our interaction, we see them building in confidence and we’re able to give them an insight into the world of work.

“Our work for clients is all about developing people and helping them reach their full potential, and that’s exactly the same approach we take with the young people in the schools we’re involved with.” 

According to the Southwark EBA CHPD’s volunteering work has “raised the aspirations of young people” in the borough.
