CHPD and TFL share leadership stage

This week, CHPD founder, Dr Tony Cockerill outlined the very latest in leadership research to a group of more than 40 public sector professionals at Public Service Leadership 09. Tony was joined at the podium by Miriam Stephens, talent manager at Transport for London.

Tony’s presentation examined the issues facing leaders in today’s turbulent environment. He stressed that there were some core leadership behaviours that were necessary for the flexible leadership needed today, but that these were generally lacking in the global leadership population. The audience heard how accurate assessment can indicate potential for leadership and can also drive training and development to ensure that a higher level of performance is achieved.

Miriam summarised the approach to talent management at TFL. She explained how a ‘high potential’ group had been defined and, with CHPD’s help, a series of workshop interventions and masterclasses had been delivered to improve performance. She acknowledged that a key part of TFL’s recent success in the area of talent management has been the senior level commitment and understanding of the link between performance and talent management.
